Announcing a new Meetup for Southern California Outdoor Adventurers!

What: Cheeseboro Canyon Hike

When: Friday, January 15, 2010 1:00 PM

Where: Cheesboro Canyon Trailhead (Upper Parking Lot - see details below)

We are planning an up and back, mellow weekday hike through the lovely Cheesboro Canyon. On the trail you can expect to see not only fellow hikers, but also mountain bikers, equestrians and pony carriages also enjoying the scenery. Lined with oak trees and surrounded by gently rolling hills characteristic of this area, this is is a nice leisurely stroll to get our fellow adventurers back in the swing of things after the holidays.

Part of the Simi Hills, you access this hike via Agoura Hills off the US-101. The trail goes along the Cheeseboro Canyon floor. There are several options we can take along the trail depending on what the group would like to do. We are meeting at 1:00pm in the upper parking lot right by the trail head.

Trail Details:

Distance: 6.5miles (or shorter if we decide to turn around early)
Total Elevation Gain: 850'/850' (the bulk of the elevation gain is in the last part of the hike)
Optional Map: USGS 7.5-min Calabasas
Agency: NPS
Difficulty: Easy to Moderately Easy Terrain
Other: Leashed Dogs Allowed

Directions:

From LA: Take the northbound (to Ventura) US-101. Take the Chesebro Canyon Exit #35 from the freeway. Immediately turn right at Palo Comado Canyon Rd. Take another immediate right onto Chesebro Rd.

Drive 0.7 miles north and then turn right again at Cheseboro Canyon Rd. At this point you will be in a smallish parking lot. Continue ahead past this first lot. The road will veer to the left and will empty into the trailhead's upper parking lot. We will be meeting at this upper parking lot. Upper Parking Lot GPS Coordinates: 34.156491,-118.73075.

Be sure and use this google map link to get the exact location of and directions to the upper parking lot from your place.

What Else You Should Know:

At the trailhead's parking lot there are out-house style restrooms, but no running water.

It is recommended to bring plenty of drinking water and sunscreen as the trail is exposed to the sun most of the way. There are some shade trees, but not very many. The weather should be in the 70s, so it shouldn't be too uncomfortable as it often can be in the heat of the day in the summer months. It is also recommended to bring some energy bars, trail-mix or snack, if you would like.

As usual, wear good, comfortable hiking shoes however tennis shoes should also be fine. The trails are primarily dirt with the occasional rock, but are generally pretty smooth. I would classify this hike as easy to moderately easy.

Please arrive 15 minutes early and be ready to start hiking at the top of the hour, at 1pm. Due to the limited daylight this time of year it is important to be able to hike back to the start position before sundown.

When the hike is done we can get together for a dinner at the Sagebrush Cantina in Calabasas or any other eating spot the group would prefer...?

This is going to be fun. Can't wait! :)

Looking forward to seeing you / meeting you all today. BTW it may be a little chillier than previously thought. As usual, it's a good idea to dress in layers and you may want to bring a jacket just in case. It tends to get chilly in the canyon this time of year, which is partially in the shade especially late in the day.

I am coming from LAX area so if you want to car pool and want to leave the LAX area around 11:30~11:45 please post a comment here on where to meet. I will check it before I leave and will leave a reply and send you a message w/ my number. Car pooling will be a great idea since traffic will be murder going over the 405 & 101.

@ Anastasia We actually usually do a lot of weekend activities, as well. I understand the aversion to traffic, though. I'm with ya there. As far as scheduling goes, some people prefer weekday, and some prefer weekend times for obvious reasons. We have a lot of members who are freelancers who often have time mid-week for hikes and between rush hours the traffic is usually low. On the other hand, there are also many members working weekdays so weekends are the perfect time for them.

@Anastasia Thank you for your interest in our hiking activities. We are always open to ideas for new hiking locations and other activities for the group. Where are you coming from and what kinds of activites/hikes are you interested in?

@ Alicia the hike should be no more than 4 hours. We wanna be headed back so that we are back at the parking lot before sundown. It could be shorter depending on what the group wants to do. Carpools are fine and often a great idea. Any one else coming from the LAX area interested in getting together a carpool?

@Michael - thanks for the note. Free things such as hikes tend to attract a lot of people. At SCOA, we focus on smaller more intimate events. We also want to get to know you. SCOA is a social networking group. 10-15 is a perfect size. BTW - since as a maybe you take up a space, please consider confirming soon. Note there are only 3 spaces left. Hope that helps. If you have specific questions don't hesitate to contact Rose - the event leader - or me.

Thanks for all the interest so far. This should be a good one. Renae, it's close to where I live too, I must admit. I live in Malibu Canyon Apartments. I also know whatcha mean about that connecting trail. I was thinking this connecter would be a cool hike to do as a 'shuttle' hike sometime. Some people would leave their cars at the trail end and others would drive everyone to the trail head. Shuttle hikes are neat cause you can cover more ground on the same hike.

It was a pristine January SoCal Day in the Canyon for our hike. The hills from the recent rains are starting to turn a beautiful green. We did see several bikers and horseback riders out as anticipated, which is always interesting to see. We took a leisurely hike north through the canyon and then took some switchbacks onto the Cheeseboro Canyon Ridge trail. We had gorgeous panoramic views westward towards Ventura/Thousand Oaks, SW towards Agoura Hills and the Santa Monica Mountain Range and even eastward towards the Los Angeles Crest Mountains. Some snow-covered peaks could also be seen popping out behind the bluish-cast Angeles Mountains in the far distance. In all, we hiked about 3 hours and did about 4 miles. Thanks everyone for some enjoyable company and overall a really fun hike! Hope to see you all again soon. ;)
    •  good hike; learned courtesies re: horseback riders/bikers; when the going was getting tough had some good advice from people there on how to stay focused;friendly conversations & nice views
