Orienteering at Mt. Pinos

This location is shown only to members

This is probably the best Orienteeing meet of the year and in one of my favorite locations. The event spans over 2 days so most participants will be camping up there at McGill campground. Of course, you are welcomed to attend just one day, either Saturday or Sunday.

The Sport:
Orienteering has been quite popular in Europe for many years and has since spread and gained popularity in many parts of the world. There has also been a club here in LA for a few years now. They are pretty well organized and host their events in great locations and have courses for all skill levels. The basic idea is to navigate a course indicated on a detailed topographical map in the shortest amount of time using map and compass. Click at the following links to learn more:

The Plan:
We'll meet at 9:30 AM for registration and beginner instruction classes for those of you who wish to take part. For you first-timers, I suggest doing a white course in teams of 4 or less, preferably with a leader in each team who has prior experience. Team members on each team should take turns finding the next control so everyone gets a chance to practice. All controls are right on the trails so they will be easy to find, but it is good practice in getting the basic idea of the sport.

When you sign up, please indicate if you would be willing to be a leader or if you are a first timer who would like to be part of a (practice) white course team.

After the practice course you may try a yellow beginner course. I believe as a first timer you get the second course free. If this is your second event, perhaps try an orange intermediate course this time.

Cost:
Depends on what you need to rent, and whether you want to do a course solo etc. It should not be more than about $10-$15 or so. Click here for prices.

Pre-Registration:
LAOC ask that everyone pre-register for the event to ensure that there will be enough maps etc. You also save time as you will have a pre-filled printed form with you. Please go here to pre-register.

On the form please include "SCOA MeetUp" in the "other 'O' club:" field so we can identify you as part of our group. Just register as an individual, unless you already have someone to team up with. You will need to type R in the second field for e-stick unless you have one (e-stick is a little device you put on your finger to register you at each control.) If you plan on doing two courses indicate this in the “Special notes to MD:” field. Write something like “Plan on doing both a white and a yellow course.” In the last field write “ORANGE”.

What to bring, outfit etc:

  • Make sure you bring enough water. I recommend a small hydration pack as it allows easy access to water and keeps hands free for map & compass.
  • Some energy bars/gels etc. and perhaps a sandwich/snacks.
  • Trail running shoes or similar with plenty of traction.
  • Long sleeve thin stretchy type shirt and pants, preferably polyester (avoid cotton). This is necessary for this venue due to poison oak.
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • A compass if you have one. If not you can rent one.
  • A whistle (for safety) if you have one. I believe you can rent those too.
  • A watch to keep track of time.
  • A filled out registration form.
  • Some cash

I enjoyed it so much that I camped there and did the second day on a more challenging course.
